The New Orleans Collection: Morning Call

Morning Call used to be located in a strip mall in Metairie. I grew up on their donuts, or beignets as they are more commonly called. They were the best beignets you could’ve gotten, in my opinion. Many a high school dance ended there, getting powdered sugar all over our dresses and suits while laughing. I have so many good memories there. On Mardi Gras Day morning, we would go there get our fix before heading uptown to the parades. It was a whole tradition thing and I’m so grateful to that little coffee and donut shop. Naturally, it was on the top of my list to add to The New Orleans Collection.

When I decided to do The New Orleans Collection for my notecards, it was never going to be any other beignet shop than Morning Call that I photographed. They have since closed their doors in Metairie, bounced from inside City Park, and are now in a beautiful new building in the perfect location. I've been a loyal patron through it all. Rarely does a food establishment make me so giddy, but when they opened their doors at the new, permanent location, I could’ve cried tears of joy. I frequently went there to devour a beignet or two, but I’ve slowed it down since. It’s the beignet spot I recommend to everyone, and it’s right on the red streetcar line that ends on the Lakeview side of City Park Avenue. Read more about that neighborhood here. To get this shot, I got up early on a beautiful Sunday morning and ran over to Morning Call with my husband. We were only one of two parties in there, so I started snapping away. It’s not easy to get such a great shot, as other patrons started filing in. Can’t you just imagine the delicious taste of those hot, fluffy donuts? Paired with that chicory cafe au lait or hot chocolate (my favorite) and you’ve got yourself a true New Orleans breakfast. If you have yet to go to Morning Call, please do yourself a favor and go. They’re the best. You’ve heard it from the beignet lover’s mouth. And that, my friends, is why they are MY favorite photo in The New Orleans Collection.
