Best Brands for Petite Women (That Actually Fit)

Finding clothes as a petite woman shouldn’t be this difficult, but somehow, it still is if you don't know where to look. I’m constantly in search of pieces that actually fit properly (not just shorter versions of regular sizing), and over time I’ve found a handful of brands that consistently work for me. I don’t rely only on petite sections either. Some of the best pieces I own are simply cropped or ankle-length styles that happen to fit perfectly without tailoring. The brands I highlight in this guide are the best brands for petite women that I actually wear and come back to.

Best Brands for Petite Women

Not all brands approach petite sizing the same way, and frankly I don't solely rely on petites only when I shop. Some brands offer dedicated petite selections, while others simply design pieces—like cropped pants or shorter silhouettes—that naturally work better on a smaller frame. Over time, I’ve found that the brands below consistently get proportions right, whether through true petite sizing or styles that don’t require alterations. This research is a lifetime in the making, so I know that I'll be able to deliver solid recommendations here.

What Height Is Considered Petite?

Petite sizing typically refers to women who are 5’4” and under, but in reality, it’s less about height and more about proportions. If you’ve ever felt like sleeves are too long, pants bunch at the ankle, or waistlines hit in the wrong place, petite sizing (or petite-friendly brands) can make a big difference. I've worn some ill-fitting pieces of clothing in my day, and it's not something I want to continue. Getting things altered is not an option all the time, either, and frankly shouldn't have to be. There are enough of us shorties to have our own dedicated line.

Are Petite Clothes Just Shorter?

Not exactly. The best petite clothing isn’t just shorter. It’s proportioned differently throughout the entire piece. That means things like rise, sleeve length, and overall fit are adjusted, not just the hem. That said, I’ve found that some non-petite brands still work really well if you know what to look for, especially when it comes to cropped styles. I've spent a lot of time doing trial and error on clothing, so I know some good brands that work, though many do not. I'll focus only on the ones you and I can wear straight out of the bag (or off the rack as we used to say in the good old days).

What Styles Work Best for Petite Women?

I’ve found that simpler, more streamlined pieces tend to work best. High-waisted pants are never going out of style for me because they fit like a glove. Cropped lengths are ideal (and I do feel like some companies are labeling their petite length as cropped in some cases). Clean silhouettes are usually more flattering than anything oversized or overly complicated. You don't want to look like a sack walking around. It doesn’t have to be restrictive. It just helps to be mindful of proportion.

The Brands for Petite Women I Wear

Spanx Barrel Leg Jumpsuit

Spanx Barrel Leg Jumpsuit

Spanx

Spanx has one of the best founder stories on earth. Sara Blakely started Spanx with $5k and some guts. She turned pantyhose into everyday shape wear, and did it with total class and sass. I've been buying Spanx for years, and I will not be stopping anytime soon. Their petite line offers me so many more options than I have at most other clothing lines, so I'm going to keep coming back. I'm not mad at the tummy control in a lot of the pieces either. This is a brand to buy if you're a petite lady like myself.

Why I buy Spanx: the fit of their clothing feels like it was made for me. They also have enough classic pieces and some edgy pieces that keep me coming back.

Spanx makes a Ponte pant that I can't get enough of...in petite!

Boden Dress Best Brands for Petite Women

My Favorite Way to Wear Stripes - My Petite Boden Dress

Boden

Boden is a brand that I have quickly become obsessed with as a petite shopper. Most of the things that they sell come in the petite sizing, and I eat it up. You'll find me perusing their websites for their amazing sales, and Poshmark when I am looking for something unspecific. Their clothes are fun, funky, fit well, and hail from Britain (that's where they are designed). I have everything from coats to skirts to dresses, and I love each piece so much. Do yourself a favor and check out Boden if you are in the petite category.

Why I buy Boden: when I want to stand out in a sassy way, I'm reaching for Boden items. Every time I wear something from this brand, I get a compliment. This is a brand that knows how to dress women.

What I currently have my eye on at Boden.

OGLmove Pants

OGLmove Pants - Perfect Petite Fit

OGLmove

Watch out. This new kid (to me) on the block OGLmove is going to be spammed by me because I am starting to quickly collect several of their petite length pants items. My first idea was to buy off of Poshmark to try them out for size. I ordered two pairs of pants, and I basically live in them because they fit so well and are so comfortable. This brand needs to go on your go-to list as a petite woman. You will be elated to wear their clothes like I am.

Why I buy OGLmove: in my quest to find more petite brands, I came across OGLmove and knew I had to jump in. The pants I bought for travel are on me almost everyday at my house, and I can't wait to take them on a trip. This is a brand I'll be expanding my collection quickly.

The most comfortable pants you'll ever own.

Madewell Jeans for Petites

Madewell Jeans for Petites

Madewell

Madewell is my GO TO for jeans. Not only do they make petite sizing, they also do tall, curvy, and regular. When I tell you I own countless pairs of Madewell jeans, I'm not kidding. The stores don't typically carry petite, so you have to order them online, but it's totally worth it. When you know your size, watch out for their sales and load up. The prices on their pants are super reasonable for clothing that fits as well as theirs. Can you tell I am a forever fan? Madewell for life.

Why I buy Madewell: Madewell lives up to their name 100%. I love their quality and their variety of women's options. I am a curvy petite woman, and I love their options to make me feel like I look great every time I put on a pair of their pants.

Some Madewell pants I own and wear on repeat.

J.Crew Factory Coat | Best Brands for Petite Women

J.Crew Factory Coat - My European Travel Coat

J.Crew Factory

Why J.Crew Factory and not plain old J.Crew? Mostly because I'm thrifty and the clothes are totally great for basics. The coat I'm wearing in this picture...I got it on super sale and it has traveled to Europe with me multiple times because it matches everything. The fact that they considerately make a petite line keeps drawing me back in, as I have tried their non-petite items and I can tell the difference in cut. I'm a fan of their fit, and I like their prices.

Why I buy J.Crew Factory: when I discovered how well J.Crew Factory petite selection fit me, I was never going back to regular sizing with them. Their prices are unbeatable, and the quality is great. This is a brand I go to for classic pieces at fair prices.

Joe's Jeans for petite

Joe's Jeans - Perfect Length Fit in Cropped

Buy Cropped Pants (My Favorite Hack)

This is where things really started to click for me. Instead of relying only on petite sections, I began looking for brands that offer cropped or ankle-length styles, and a lot of them ended up fitting perfectly without any alterations. If I do want pants by brands that don’t have petite lengths, I know what my inseam is and I'll shop the “cropped” pants of these brands. I know the range of lengths that could possibly work on me, and I purchase with confidence. This has honestly been the biggest shift in how I shop as a petite woman. I’ve gotten perfectly sized pants and jeans by using this hack, and I’d encourage you to consider doing the same.

Brands I Like with Cropped Options:

  • Quince
  • Seven for All Mankind
  • Michael Stars
  • Splendid
  • Joe's Jeans
  • Pact

It takes some time to suss out the right brands and fits, but it’s part of the process of being petite.

Final Thoughts on Best Petite Brands for Women

Shopping as a petite woman is less about finding one perfect brand and more about knowing what works. Once you figure that out - cropped lengths, better proportions, and brands that consistently fit - it gets a lot easier to build a wardrobe that doesn’t require constant tailoring. Getting well-fitting clothes is a luxury that I encourage all women to take the time to do, petite or not, and I think this guide will help you get there. My fellow petites: you are worth the effort.
