Denim has always been one of the biggest staples in my closet. No matter what the fashion gurus of the world say is in style for a season, I am donning my denim on repeat because it’s comfortable, versatile, and easy to style, and it feels like me. Each of us has a unique way of dressing ourselves, and for me, denim is often my go-to.
I'm not someone who goes out and buys whatever the latest fashion trend is. I prefer pieces that work no matter what year it is, and can be styled for everyday life, dressed up for dinner, or packed for my travels without much effort. Denim is that for me. Whether it’s a pair of jeans that fits like a glove, a cute denim dress, a denim jacket (obsessed), or even a matching denim-on-denim outfit, I love how timeless it is and adaptive to different styles and seasons.
If you’re wondering how to style denim without overthinking it, these are some outfit ideas and styling combinations I wear most often.
There’s a reason denim has stayed relevant and in style for decades: it works with mostly everything. I wear denim while traveling, walking around a city, going to dinner, running errands, or watching football (soccer) matches in Paris. It works with sneakers, sandals, heels, boots, and flats. You can dress it down, elevate it with some sexy heels, make it more feminine, edgy, or classic depending on how you rock it.
I also love that denim ages well. It never fails that when someone compliments me on a piece, I've owned it for half a century. Unless I've grown out of something (thanks, perimenopause) it remains in my closet until it's worn to shreds. Denim, to me, is the most amazing material and look a gal could ask for.
What Makes Denim So Easy to Style?
Denim easily pairs well with:
That’s part of why it remains one of the easiest materials to build outfits around.

Jeans with Loafers
I've found great pairs of jeans at all different price ranges. From brands like Quince to 7 for All Mankind to Madewell, I've got the gamut of brands because they all serve their purpose. Each pair has a few different parts to play, and they each get their day in the sun. Jeans help me feel put together and structured in a very un-fussy way, and I appreciate that about them. Here are some ways I style my jeans.
One of the easiest ways to style denim jeans is with:
I typically keep the styling simple and let the denim jeans create the foundation of the outfit.
Shoes completely change the look of denim jeans. I'll go from fashion sneaks to high heels with the same pair, and you wouldn't know I was the same person. Watch out! Those shoes are the key to how you want to dress up or down.
I usually wear mine with:
If I want denim jeans to feel slightly more elevated, I add:
These pieces instantly make the outfit feel more intentional without losing comfort.
My absolute favorite jeans are from Madewell.

I've come to love a one piece suit, particularly if it's of the denim fabric. I now have a couple of them, and I would get more if I only let myself. They are snazzy and good looking, and I'll share how I style mine.
My denim jumpsuit has come with my on my travels because it's comfortable while still looking polished. Win-win.
With a denim jumpsuit, I usually keep the styling fairly simple. The outfit speaks for itself, and it's a relatively bold move to wear, so KISS (keep it simple stupid).
I typically pair mine with:
If I want a little more shape or layering, I’ll add:
There's no need to overdo it. The entire outfit is amazing as is and you will get some eyes on you if you wear it.

Denim Striped Vest
My favorite newer denim trend is wearing a denim vest as an actual top instead of simply layering it. It feels modern, structured, and versatile. Most importantly, I feel cute and I like that.
Because denim vests can feel like the main event, I usually pair mine with:
This keeps the outfit balanced. You don't want to get too crazy with the bottoms.
A denim vest already draws attention, so I usually stick with:

Favorite Denim Dress from Sézane
If I had endless amounts of money, I would also have endless amounts of denim dresses. I cannot get enough of these things in every length and style. I'll share a few of my styling tips here. You can throw one on and immediately look put together.
Depending on the look I want, I’ll wear a denim dress with:
Denim dresses are especially great for travel because they:
I love this dress from Sézane.

Denim Jacket from Hudson
When I tell you my denim jacket is going to be worn until it's threads, I'm not kidding. I've worn out so many denim jackets because when you find the right one for you, it goes with everything. I'm obsessed with mine and wear it all year long.
I especially love pairing denim jackets with:
Choose the style right for you. I'm petite so I don't want oversized - I like more fitted. But an oversized one might be your jam.
Yes, oversized denim jackets are still incredibly wearable and easy to style. Similar to the oversized leather jackets that are around town.
I personally prefer slightly more structured fits because they layer more comfortably and create a more polished look.

Going for the Boating Look
Denim shorts are one of those pieces that can either look timeless or very dated depending on the styling. I've been wearing them my entire life, from hemmed to cut off to short to long. As I am now older than my younger years, I like a more tailored and appropriately lengthed jean short.
My favorite denim shorts outfits usually involve:
If you're wearing "nicer" denim shorts, you can dress up the outfit a bit more than cut offs that you might be wearing to a festival or pool party.
I usually pair denim shorts with:

Adorable Denim Blazer
A denim blazer feels slightly more elevated than a denim jacket while still being easy to wear casually. Not very common, I don't think, but if you can find one, snag it. They go with a lot. It’s one of my favorite layering pieces when I want something structured without feeling overly formal. A denim blazer feels sophisticated.
I usually wear a denim blazer with:
The contrast between structured and casual pieces keeps the outfit balanced.

Outfit for Paris
A denim button-down shirt is one of the easiest layering pieces to keep in your closet. I have worn out a few and I'm on the hunt for another one as I write this. So many companies make them, it's just a matter of your style preference. It works tied, tucked, layered, or worn open.
I most often wear mine:
Yup, more than ever now. If you know how to wear it, it looks like you've come right off a runway. The easiest way to wear double denim is by mixing slightly different denim washes instead of trying to be matchy.
Love this slim fit denim shirt by Polo.

Denim Skirt Visits Bryce Canyon
Denim skirts are a fantastic alternative to jeans, especially if you're like me and live in Hades in the summer. They go with everything, and you can make them look dressier or less dressy, depending on the style. I have a few.
I usually style denim skirts with:
Because the skirt already adds texture and structure, I prefer keeping the rest of the outfit simple.
Depending on the season, I’ll wear denim skirts with:
Denim skirts are also good for travel because they:
Quince makes a perfect and simple denim skirt.

Wide Leg Denim with White Denim Jacket
Denim is one of my favorite things to pack because it mixes so easily with other pieces. I wear jeans on repeat the whole trip, and you'd never know it (just don't get too close to me unless your nose is stopped up - kidding).
For travel, I usually bring:
That alone can create multiple outfits without overpacking.
Denim works especially well for travel because it:
At the end of the day, denim works because it’s season-free, timeless, and easy to wear repeatedly without feeling boring. Most of my favorite outfits on any given day are denim and built around simple basics that I can style differently depending on the weather/season, destination, or mood. That’s ultimately why I continue wearing denim year after year: it always feels effortless, comfortable, and in style no matter where I’m going.
