How to Fest in New Orleans Like a Local (Festival Survival Guide)

Attending festivals in New Orleans is something that many people come to the city to enjoy. For some of us, it’s in our genetic makeup. Whether it’s a food festival, a music festival, or a holiday festival, festivals in New Orleans are enjoyed by the thousands. While I wouldn’t call myself an avid fester anymore (I am a lot pickier about which festivals I attend), I do enjoy several per year and am lucky enough to live in a city where festivals are in abundance. With that being said, it’s important to get some pro tips on how to enhance your festival experience in the Big Easy. I have compiled a survival guide  that will make attending a festival in New Orleans more pleasant and appealing.

How to Fest in New Orleans Like a Local

There are several things about going to festivals that a lot of people don't quite understand. In New Orleans in particular, our climate is very humid and sticky, and the need to hydrate needs to be top of the mind. There's nothing worse than watching people who aren't used to festing here have emergency medical assistance because they overdid it on the booze or the heat. Those are just a couple of examples of things that can happen if you don't know what you're doing. This is where I will help you make the most of your time in New Orleans at one of our many festivals.

When Are Festivals in New Orleans?

Festivals in New Orleans are all year round. There are about 100 throughout the entire year, so you won't have to wait long to experience one when you visit. We have spring festivals like French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest. Summer festivals like Essence and Creole Tomato Fest. Fall we have Oktoberfest, and winter is Mardi Gras. There are plenty more during the times of year, and we are lucky enough to have a climate that permits year-round festing, which brings people to our city no matter what season.

How to Eat Like a Local at Festivals

How to Choose the Right Food

  • Follow the long lines (I wish it weren't the case)
  • Don’t stop at the first booth you see - make a round to scope out what looks good to you
  • Look for dishes unique to that specific festival
  • Do some research beforehand

How to Maximize How Much You Eat

  • Share food so you can try more (my favorite)
  • Pace yourself
  • Make sure all the dishes you get are ones you absolutely want

What Makes New Orleans Festival Food Different

  • It’s actually good (not just “festival food”)
  • Top food places in the city participate in this
  • You’ll find things you won’t see anywhere else (think crawfish dishes!!)

How to Navigate Festival Crowds Like a Local

Timing Matters

  • Earlier = more enjoyable (I like to get in, enjoy, and get out)
  • Peak hours = chaos (plan accordingly)

Where to Stand (or More Importantly, Sit)

  • Edges = more space, easier movement for more food, drinks, or bathroom
  • Middle = packed and harder to move around

Moving Through the Crowd

  • Go with the flow, not against it
  • Bring your patience (something I am still learning)

Bathroom Strategy (My Most Important Festival Requirement)

  • Go before you really need to
  • Know where they are early
  • Mentally prepare (and have your spare TP ready to go if needed)

How to Drink Without Ruining Your Day

Smart Drinking Strategy

  • Pace yourself (heat and humidity hit differently here)

What People Get Wrong (Visitors and Amateur Locals Alike)

  • Drinking too fast too early
  • Not hydrating
  • Mixing everything in sight (stick to one thing)
